Questions about pruning new mango trees

flgardengurlAugust 19, 2014

I have recently planted two 3' mango trees and one 7' mango tree. They have just grown another "top" of leaves on their stalks. Am I supposed to cut these off to encourage new stalks to grow out or should I let them grow for a while?

Any pruning suggestions for newly planted mangos would be greatly appreciated as I have never grown any before.

Thank you!

One important point that he didn't mention in the video is where to cut. You want to cut 0.5" above a SINGLE leave node, not above the MULTIPLE leaves node. cut above a multiple leaves node will grow multiple branches at the same node, and they will be weak branches, no good.

From my experience, pruning causes fewer fruits to be produced the following season. The trees are quite bushy anyway, and I think it is better to let them get much larger before worrying about pruning.
