What kind of papaya?

AderynetOctober 2, 2013

Hi! Bought these dwarf papaya seeds about a year ago. I live in cold Sweden and have given these plants at much love as I possibly could.

When I look around at pictures of papayas I can't find anyone looking like this. Is this really a papaya?

If so.. can you cross pollinate papayas? Cause I think these are all female flowers, am I correct? And I've bought some seeds that promises 66% hermoafrodites now. Lets see about that though :)
If you can't cross pollinate I can just throw these out.

Thanks.

I'm almost certain these aren't papaya trees. I've never seen papayas look like this in any stage of growth. Perhaps the seed supplier mixed up orders? I personally had a bad experience with a seed company myself. I ordered dill seeds from some off brand company and when they sprouted turned out to be some type of grass. If possible I would call the company and explain the situation. It's likely you could receive some replacement seeds.

It looks exactly like a naranjilla, or lulo (Solanum quitoense). I have one which hasn't fruited yet. Maybe it is because of the summer temperatures when they are above 30C.

Oh! naranjilla it is! Thank you so much for your help. I still bought these as papaya seeds though. So I've been so carefull not having them outside when it has been colder then 15C. Man! These plant survive at 1C! Argh! So much work in vain :P

Keep taking good care of this plant and maybe it will reward you with fruits.

And beware of the spines above and below leaves!
