Small bushes in heavy shade

dreahowellApril 10, 2010

I am looking to add a perimeter of small bushes along the fence of my small town home yard. I have no clue where to start and what to consider since I am a first time homeowner and "planter". I have some red'ish clay under a thin layer of dirt in my yard, and get medium to heavy shade. I am looking for something durable through winter and small so it will not overtake the small yard we do have. I would love to hear any suggestions!

You might like the Japanese Holly (ilex crenata)also called Boxleaf holly. I have it in several places in a good amount of shade, it receives morning sun until 10:30am, then is in fairly heavy shade (3 large gumball trees overhead), they are easy to keep small by pruning, and they also grow slow to moderate. In the photo below you will see an example next to the foreground, next to the red japanese maple.

Here is a link that might be useful: Japanese holly
