French Gray Shallots

HollyinMasonNeck(7)September 25, 2011

I'm new to this forum. I have about 30 lbs of French Gray Shallots that I need to plant soon. Is anyone growing these in VA? I have been growing them for about 3 years but I'm looking for ways to maximize my harvest. Any suggestions on soil amendments would be appreciated. Do others plant these in fall or spring? I've had really good luck planting them in the fall. Thank you! Oh I would also be interested in exchanging some for Walking onions.

It is months after when you posted this message, but I am not too far from you, in Fredericksburg, and I have lots and lots of Egyptian Topsetting Onions, the walking onions you mentioned.

As with any onions or garlic, lots of compost mixed into the soil works the best - if your soil compacts you'll not have really great success with things that grow below the ground. I'd plant them in the Fall as well, or so long as the soil can be worked.
