What's the soil like in the Charlottesville area?

We're thinking of relocating and am wondering what is the most common soil type in the Charlottesville area. I know soil can vary a great deal in a relatively small area but just trying to get an idea. Thank you in advance.

Most of Albemarle county is piedmont red clay. Very fertile, but heavy. Going east in Fluvanna, you find a shale soil ( Sassafras) that need pretty heavy amendments.

I'm sorry I haven't been back to respond. Long story...car accident, holidays, buying a house. I'll be at Lake Monticello and that sounds like the heavy amendment area. I'll come prepared to work. :)

You could always do what we do and use raised beds. We use the Square Foot Gardening method and it's pretty darned foolproof!
