Russian Sage - Pruning and Maintenance

jardineratxJanuary 27, 2012

I have a Russian Sage (Perovskia) that I've had planted in a very dry, sunny bed for about 3 years. Although I am pleased with the fact that it is drought and heat tolerant, I am disappointed that it doesn't bloom very much, nor for a long time (which is what I expected). I'm wondering if I should prune it every spring, or just let it alone. Even though it is several years old, it has never gotten taller than 18", more or less. Perhaps there are different cultivars?

Please offer your experiences on growing this plant.

I have the Filigran cultivar and it blooms off and on all during spring, summer and fall, stays upright, and gets about 2 1/2' tall. Does great. I prune it down to about 4-6" in late winter, just before things start waking up. Wouldn't trade it for anything, however, I only have a single specimen, and since it doesn't get very big I think it would make a bigger impact if I had several planted together. I have them planted near crimson pygmy barberry and they set each other off very nicely.

Thanks for the information debndal! I think I will look for a cultivar that may bloom better for me than the one I have now, which I believe is the species. Meanwhile, I will cut mine down very low to see if hard pruning will help its performance.

I have never had much luck with them. I do not know why.
