almost as much as melon?

Because when they are not crowding a food source they are hanging out in the damp, dark airy places breathing in oxygen.

Yep, just take a 10 inch piece of large cardboard tubing (the kind that fabric rolls come on), put some melon inside and bury it laying down flat in the worm bin. Now the worms have the best of both worlds: a free source of oxygen together with their favorite food.
