Seaweed extract diluted in water for seedlings?

pintoksJanuary 29, 2013

Hi All,

I have many vegetable seedlings coming up with their first set of true leaves and was wondering if it would be a good idea to water them with a seaweed extract (in my case kelp extract that has been diluted at about 2 tablespoons of the dried kelp to a gallon of water). I don't want to burn the roots by fertilizing too early, but if this would be a good boost to get them on their way to a productive spring, I am all in for kelp!

The seedlings are varieties of tomatoes, peppers, and herbs primarily that are growing indoors under lights.

If the kelp water is ok, what would be an advisable schedule for frequency of substituting the kelp-water for pure water?

Many thanks in advance for your thoughts and advice. This is my first post here and I am very pleased to find these discussions! Hope to contribute back to the community.

Cheers,
BB

Welcome to Garden Web. I never really heard of kelp so that is a new one on me.
I use my betta fish's dirty water to fertilize my orchids and they are established a little more so I think that just plain water maybe best or listen to a more experienced seed starter person So someone please post a follow up for BB.

Hi BB,
I generally don't fertilize until the seedlings have at least 3-4 sets of leaves. And you certainly want to dilute the kelp by 50% of the recommended rate to avoid burning the leaves or the roots. I use liquid kelp, and it sure helps to green things up.
Good luck!
