divahethr(7b)August 12, 2013

Welcome! Share your Hoard. This swap is for annuals, perennials, cacti, succulents, bulbs, tropicals, houseplants etc. Signups will be until August 26th. Partners will be assigned August 28th. Packages must be sent out by September 12th using priority mail with tracking numbers. When you sign up please list your "haves" and "wants". This is how partners will be paired up matching up other peoples "haves" with your "wants". You then can pick plants from your partners list vice versa. If it fits it ships lol. I stole that. We are trying to get our monies worth with these high shipping rates. I try to fit as many plants as possible. Be generous and have fun. I hope to see some old friends and make new friends too. I will be having games and prizes and the "x" person to join will be getting a prize
I will post my lists after I have my coffee tomorrow. Welcome!

hello!

Been awhile for me... I think I can remember how to pack a box of plants. I confess though I don't have anything very exotic. (I do have a lot though)

If you have room for someone who has a lot of the ordinary :) I could definately fill up someone's garden.

Nothing Rare or exciting here I am afraid. I have limited "sunny" areas in my yard and unfortunately little water to spare. So if it isn't tough, drought and shade tolerant it gets shovel pruned in short order.

Weigelia
Red, (1 rooted)
pink (1 Rooted)
variegated(1 rooted)

Azalea Kurume 'Hinodegiri'

Ligustrum ovalifolium

Boston Ivy- Parthenocissus tricuspidata

Virginia Creeper - Parthenocissus quinquefolia

Gardenia Rose Gallon size (guessing here, the plant has been growing on its own root for over a year) see link for picture

Rosa Rugosa "red" extremely fragrant single deep pink, (suckers)

Heuchera "Rasberry Regal"

Heuchera "Amethyst Myst"

Hosta Green GIANT (that is what I call it) grown from seeds about 4 years ago. Beautiful deep green glossy with well defined ridges and purple flowers.

Hosta mini - Twist of Lime

Hosta mini - Lemon Lime

Canna indica (small red flower, 6-8 feet tall)

Canna -(Large yellow flowers, 4 - 6 feet)

Tradescantia pallida (purple heart) cuttings)

Tall Upright sedum (cuttings or plants)
(I was told this is autumn joy, but the flowers are panicle shaped and range from white to pale pink,
so in spite of what I was told, this plant does not look like the "Autumn Joy" I have grown in the past,
pretty, loved by bees, but not what it was supposed to be)

Ground cover sedum/succulent (cuttings)

Blue Spruce
Coral Reef
Angelina
Green flat leaf (like voodoo, but green)
Trailing (small diamond shape leaves, not evergreen but very hardy)

Iris (oldfashioned TB) pale purple flower smells like grape jelly (really)

Angel Trumpets. LARGE pink flower. cut or dig, these are ground hardy in this area. (just looked at these will have to be "CUT" they are over 4 feet tall now)

Fairy Rose, 2 small bushes (last year cuttings) flowered this year

American Cranberry - Viburnum opulus

Red Hot Poker (division)

Cuttings: (all easy to start in plain garden soil)

annual
Coleus "Red Head"
Wax begonia
angelwing begonia
Hibiscus Tropical (peach double)
golden creeping jenny (annual, HAHAHA)

Shrub: (all easy to start)
Gardenia
Peony Pink Althea (pink double with red eye)
Weigelia red, pink
Boxwood
Emerald Gaiety Euonomus
Hydrangea-NikkoBlue
Hydrangea-Pale purple Mophead (supposed to be pink)
Hydrangea-Lacecap Blue (supposed to be "red")
Hydrangea MiniPenny (Limited, small plant)
(all hydrangeas ar "BLUE" in my yard)

wanted:

Hosta chartuese color

hosta blue color

canna with interssting folliage (no giant red leaf please)

Angel Trumpet White

Daffodil (not yellow)

hellabore

huechera (other than the ones I have)

Campanula rapunculus or rotundifolia (really want this badly)

Hydrangea (I prefer macrophila or paniclulata to lacecaps) White or unusual color (dark) soft wood cuttings are fine.

Succulents that are hardy to zone 8B (I don't do houseplants, small house, dark and dry inside)

:D

sounds about right except for the "dry" part. We are having the wettest year in 60 or 70 years. (I guess that qualifies as weird)

This year the "pest" was unrelenting caterpillars. (haven't seen any plant devouring giant grasshoppers yet this year) maybe they filled up at your place :O

Anything that grows in the shade/partshade with beautiful foliage is a bonus. Love cannas, hostas, leafy goodness.

My hubby got me one of those lightweight hoses they advertise on tv, its brilliant! no more lugging 100 feet of hose around. makes the watering much more pleasant.

I need that hose hahaha...yes I love the rain this year the ground isn't cracking for once. I keep seeing dragonflies everywhere big huge black striped ones! Which is good I guess. I don't have much shade which dries up the rain faster than fast haha

Frances Coffill(7b)

I was very skeptical about those Hoses. But my mother in law got one and I could see how easily she managed it. (she is 78)

Compared with 20 or 30lb of heavy duty rubber hose (filled with water) oh my aching EVERYTHING. these things are just Brilliant! we put snap connecters on everything I carry a 100 foot hose in a plastic icecream tub. it weighs nothing! practically rolls itself up when you turn off the water.

I don't know how durable, but worth the 10-20 dollars even if I have to buy a new one every year.... I am not getting younger

Years ago I swapped for bamboo with a lady in California the plant she sent me wasn't bamboo but she sent me a box of succulents with it I think they are pachyverias and echeveria I have no idea but they make it through my winter here.
Yes you can add to your want list. That is very cool to do that the more the better! So far I have something on everyone's want list so far heheh

Hi - Just, had a couple of questions. What size, priority box are we supposed to send? As, I may have to send the larger box. As, my plants are mature and I would likely be sending multiples of each plant??? Plus, I need these sun plants outa here asap. Or, I may be donating or composting..... Anyway, please let us know. Thank you, so much! Mistee:))

Ok. Sorry I'm just now getting around to posting my list. School just started here so it was a hectic week! I finally have some time to breathe. (Yeah right! Lol!)

Haves:

Two different Gaura and they are mixed up so you will get one or the other, or both. Gaudi pink and Gaudi red. The Gaudis are more upright than the other gauras. I like them.

Agastache "Summer Sunset"-a hummingbird magnet and the foliage smells amazing!!! It's a pretty peachy color. Looks nice with the Gaura.

Centaurea "Black Sprite"-this is a shady plant. Might do partial in the northern states. Nice dark color and not as weedy as some of the others.

Orange trumpet vine-rooted

Tropicanna rhizome

Lemon balm-rooted

Vinca-variegated rooted

NOID sedum- small leaved trailing variety. Very pretty and delicate

White datura-might not ship well, but we can try!

Orange ditch lilies

Hardy hibiscus-either white or red

NOID asst irises

Basil-forgot name. Has purple flowers- maybe cinnamon?

English ivy

WANTS:

Any brug cutting! NOID is fine. Had some but the ex husband threw them away. :-/

White liatris

Saffron crocus

Mock orange-rooted please. I'm not good with rooting shrubs

Butterfly bush-any color (rooted) yellow or purple is my favorite

Toad lilies

Clematis-any. Really looking for Sweet Autumn right now and a nice purple

Hardy figs

Akebia vines-white and chocolate

Any oriental lilies

Any night blooming plants

I love bulbs, so anything hardy to zone 7. Especially if it smells good!

Elephant ears

Hostas-any

I've got a lot of shade to fill in my new house, so anything for that is welcome!

I love fragrance and heirloom bulbs. Anything night blooming or that attracts butterflies and hummers.

I also have veggie and fruit gardens.

Sorry I don't have more exotic stuff to trade but I'm starting over. Can't wait to see who I'm matched with! Everyone's lists look so wonderful!

mistee

if you would be so kind as to 'edit' your existing list instead of creating a new one everytime it would make it a lot easier for everyone.

(under the word "clippings" at the top of your own messages you will see "EDIT", clicking this allows you to make changes to your own messages)

Heather has said "side Trades" are OK (should wait until after you find out what your partner wants.

Priority Box size will likely depend on what your partner chooses from your list. Since we do not know yet whether we will be straight swaps (two people exchanging between themselves) or mixed up (random pairs where the person who sends to you is not the person you send to)

:)

welcome mamabear.

the idea is to list "Surplus" plants that you want to trade.

Hi Mistee I hope you can hang on a few more days with your sun plants. People have until the 26th to join up. I guess you can side trade but you might be side trading with your future partner lol or not enough left for your partner. I will hurry up and try to partner everyone up as soon as possible after the sign up deadline. I'm throwing a baby shower tomorrow and I know people are getting ready with back to school. I don't think everyone posted their lists yet either. Hope everyone is having a great Friday!

Mistee I saw that you had a question about boxes. You don't have to use priority mail boxes from the Post Office you can use any box and just buy priority mail postage. I have taken priority boxes (because they are free) and attached them together. Many times I have done that with no problems. I love the triangle tubes they are 2 feet long you can get lots in those. If your post office has them mine is out and I have ordered some but since they have switched box designs they don't seem to have any and I have to take what's available. If anyone needs help with packing or mail questions feel free to ask.

Hi divahethr , Thank you, for politely answering all my many questions.
Sorry, if i seem anxious.... I am ready, to start
packing my boxes. I order, my priority boxes from
the 1 - 800 number (for free ) and they are delivered to my door for free.
In case anyone needs to order boxes, just ask
your post office and they will give you the number.
So, I always have exactly what is needed.
I have been busy these past few weeks, cleaning
out my gardens.
As, I am changing everything to the shady beds.
So, I have pots of plants in a holding area
for the swap! :)) Thank you, so much , Mistee :))

Thanks Heather.
The older we get the more 'family' emergencies there seem to be. Nothing serious, we hope.I just didn't want to leave anyone hanging, just in case.

Fabulous lists everyone. perhaps I will be able to do some trades in October.

http://postcalc.usps.com/
Zackey about Priority mail it's fast and cheap. First class or whatever they are calling it now it's not much cheaper but way slower. Prices depend on distance and weight. It might not cost 8 it might be cheaper if the person you are sending to is closer. I sent 40 plants to CA from VA it cost me 12 something (with a flat rate box priority mail box) but if I sent it to NY it would have cost me 8 something ( with a regular priority mail box)...that amounts to like 20 cents a plant and I think if I sent it closer like PA it would like only 7 something. I hope that explains it.
I'm still waiting on Pinkiris I emailed her but she never responded if she doesn't post her lists I may not be able to include her

I get the priority box called a shoebox at the post office. You can get lots of plants in it and I don't think I've ever paid over 8-9 dollars to ship with delivery confirmation. I do my postage online and it is a little cheaper and delivery confirmation is free if you print your own postage.

Mistee17, it is a cucumber vine. I can hardly wait to see who my partner will be. I never shipped more than a few seedlings before. I just put them in a wet paper towel in a baggie and put a tie or rubberband around it. But that was in a bubble envelope. How do you pack your boxes to keep the plants safe? What is EE?

Hi Zackey EE is an elephant ear
thank you for asking about plant shipping.
I give the plants a good watering the night before especially if they are in pots. Shake off excess dirt or wash dirt off then wrap the rootball in moist newspaper (my experience is papertowels dry out faster than paper) then wrap rootball only with plastic I use glad cling wrap so I don't have to use tape. Try not to use tape or have the plastic touching the plant. Try to have the only think touching plants is newspaper because it's a natural fiber. Plastic can cook plants in the heat although I just received plants in a bread bag and they looked ok. Then I wrap the plant in newspaper and it cushions the plant very well.

logee's mails in the pot but for us to mail that adds extra weight and takes up too much room but the way she wraps is great

banana ship with attaching boxes together
I like how he attaches the boxes together and he wraps the rootball well but we probably won't be mailing anything this big haha

this is a slideshow i made a few years ago before youtube
this is for mailing succulents they are much tougher than regular plants

Please keep in mind that it's not legal to ship plants with soil attached unless you are a certified nursery and have the appropriate shipping paperwork from your nursery inspector. Things should be shipped with as much soil removed as possible. This eliminates the spread of insects and diseases to other states.

Mailing cuttings. Please be generous if you are trading cuttings. Strip the bottom leaves off and
Wrap the ends well with moist paper. Try to send 4-5 cuttings at least.
I'm working on the partner lists now. It's gonna be a few last minute joiners need to post their lists now. Pinkiris/Jayeanne if you can edit your list with more specifics names and colors really soon.
cmwsquirrl if you can be really fast and update your email you can join.

If you look at members wants lists and you think you can really send a spectacular box to a certain member and you would like to be considered as their sender please email me. It might not be on your list but you know that your best friend's mother's brother has a huge bunch of plants that this person wants hahaha....COULD HAPPEN

Meli,
My venus fly trap is still a baby so I dont think Ill be able to divide it yet :( The wooly rose isn't growing very fast either but I can probably spare a leaf or two off of it, and I'm pretty sure I have enough Anacampseros now to send you a cutting, it will probably be small though if that's ok with you. The other 1-5 is no problem at all! Also, I see that you have string of pearls on your want list, I believe I can get my hands on some if you are still wanting some, let me know. Oh and email me your address please!

Thanks Chelsie. So exited to get new plants.

I haven't received latest news from mamabear. I prefer to mail plants on Monday. Hopefully, she'll get to me with her address and plants list soon.

Any other pair have difficulties to contact each other?

Happy swapping.

Pinkiris-
Wow. Seriously? I've had to track you down and wait days for you and never posted for you on here. Then you finally respond and send me an email yesterday, and I was busy today and didn't get a chance to catch my breath yet, and you call me out on the board? Yikes! Look, just send me whatever you want, and I'll send you all the things you requested off my list I posted and my trade list. How's that? This was supposed to be for fun. This doesn't seem like it...

Sounds great Heather! I can't wait to get my prize! I was just a little surprised is all. Probably sounded a little snippy. Sorry about that. Lol. I'm sure it will go smoothly from here on out. You made a good match. We each had things the other wanted. I'll post when I get your package. Thanks again for hosting the swap!

That's not a Hosta, Erin. It's not like other Gingers I have had either. I received a piece in trade a couple of years ago labeled as I have labeled it for you. It will develop a bulbous root like some you may have, but I have never researched it to try to pin it down, exactly.
I'm glad the box made it so quickly. This was a fun one to put together.
