Couple of trellis questions

Smarsh7903April 11, 2011

I am really wanting to experiment with a trellis. I have a small garden and I want to do watermelons in it without the fear of my watermelons eating everything. I have some dead space (space I semi cleared out next to the garden that used to be part of a bamboo grove and is impossible to dig in) and was thinking that if I made a ridge and make the vines grow into that zone that I wouldn't have to worry about making a trellis. Also, I was wondering how long it would take grapes to fill in a trellis tunnel over time. I have a section of sidewalk next to the house that would make a great 10ft trellis tunnel and I thought that grapes would be nice to fill it in. Besides grapes, what is a nice vine that you would keep? Thanks for the help!

This is a picture of my garden plot. To the left is where I want to plant the watermelons

This is the left of my garden, the area is about fifteen feet wide, probably a little wider. All the leaves will be taken care of, they are covering a stump up.

Grapes on trellis tunnel.
What kind of grape, table like grape Vitis : Concord.
Or do you mean Muscadine grape, if muscadine, do you mean hybrid or wild muscadine.
The hybrid are sweeter & less vegetation(vine grow)then wild muscadine.
Most, if not all grapes will shed they leaves in winter, even in warm Al.
Also the fruit grows on the new growth, so you need to prune it every year. Build the tunnel so you can reach it with a ladder from both sides.
Cover most tunnels will take 3 to 4 years from planting.
If your tunnel is more then 6 feet long, you can plant a vine on each side. I would not plant on all four corners, unless the tunnel was 12 feet long or longer.
