Trellising 3 different squash, question

Lorri_DK(7b/8a)June 26, 2012

I am growing "sweet mama" kabocha, zucchino rampicante, and austrailian butter squash on a vertical trellis. I have never trellised squash before and I was wondering if they will be strong enough to hold onto the fruit or do I need to tie the fruit to the trellis so they don't fall off under their own weight?

Thank you so much!

I grow rampicante on a VERY strong trellis. It is a huge plant and you may have to weave it into the trellis a little as it grows, but it will hold it's fruit without help. The first year I grew it was in a huge container on a five foot tomato cage. It went to the top of the cage, came back down to the ground, then ran 15-20 feet onto the ground, so be prepared for a big plant.

I have never grown these plants, but in New York City, a roof top gardener used pantyhose mesh nylon to hold up all this large fruit to save space. Melons, squash, gourds, his honey dew melon where the biggest I have ever seen.
