Help re new grapevine to be pruned to climb

RedFenceJanuary 29, 2013

Dear Internet:

I bought a house for the first time. Found out I like gardening. Have no experience, but have been planting trees and ripping up neglect.

I want to prune a grapevine to run up a pillar to the slatted roof of our front porch.

The grape will need to climb about 10 feet before it branches out.

I brought home and planted the vine. Faces west and gets sun from noon to sunset. The vine is about 1 foot high, then branches in the shape of a Y for 6 inches. There are some buds on the arms of the Y, a number of pruned branch spaces.

Does anybody have any general advice about pruning grapes to climb? More specifically, can they have 2 trunks? Should I prune it all the way back to just prior to the first branching?

Thanks in advance.

You might find the information at the link below useful. It talks about both pruning for production and for ornamental use.
