Flowering vines for Zone 3

dusty1too(Zone 3, MN)March 8, 2007

Am looking for a vine for a south-facing, partial shade location which flowers most of our short summer. Any cultivars of clematis which would fit the bill?

Dusty, do check into any of the viticella types, these would be a very good choice for a partially shaded location. The viticellas always bloom their heads off!

Hi Margie! I usually have zone 4 winters but have seen minus 45 F. temperatures and had -39 F. several years ago. My trumpet vine dies back to the ground in these temperatures but resprouts in the Spring. If fact, they are hard to kill. On a good year when the temperatures don't go below about -20 F. the vines may be OK and even give you a few flowers, but I have not had too much luck with getting many flowers, so have resorted to clematis instead. I do have a wisteria good to -40 F. (Blue Moon) that you might consider trying to grow in your area.
