Grape Vine pruning

farmermiller01April 17, 2012

Hey everyone,

So I finally had a moment to prune my grape vines. I know it's too late to have done it but I figured no grapes are better than grapes plagued with black rot.

I wanted to prune them like the vineyards do with the T shape formation.

My question is will shoots come out of the cordons next year? The existing cordons don't appear to have had any shoots out of them for years.

Will they shoot out of the end of the cordon?

I only have the trunk and maybe 10 feet of cordon left trellised to a pipe formation in the shape of an H

well, likely as not either the vines grew or they didn't by now. Yes, grapes can bud from the side of the bark where no bud is evident. If you pruned them late, then you should not remove more than 1/3 of the vine if you want grapes this year.

Don't know where you're at, but if Black Rot is a problem, then I would switch varieties. Here in the East, seedless grapes are very hard to grow without a lot of spraying. Most sucess has been with varieties that originate in NY state.
