Enough food for worms?

dr.liz(7 NJ)November 9, 2012

I'm toying with the idea of setting up a VC system. (My family finally stopped laughing at my vacuum sealer, so I have to give them a new source of amusement.) It's just DH and me at home, and I'm not sure we're going to produce enough scraps to keep worms. Right now I'm filling about 1 biobag a week with food scraps, about a gallon or so. In the winter, though, we use more frozen vegies and have fewer scraps. Mostly coffee grounds, apple cores, and a few spoons of leftovers. Will that be enough? Are there other good free sources of worm food?

That's more than enough scraps for a small bin. I 'feed' my RubberMaid bin approximately 700 grams of kitchen waste weekly.

Cardboard. Worms do eat bedding so they'll eat cardboard along with the regular feedings.

Worth a read, Bently just talked about bins and long gaps between feedings..

You describe enough food to feed about 2 pounds of worms.

Fall leaves.
I collected corn husks during corn season from the produce store/farm. That usually helps me over winter.

Quit toying with the idea and do it! When I started I worried about enough food also. Worm food is everywhere if you just look around. The real question is what kind of system is right for you. I agree about 2 lbs of worms for you, but you might want to start with 1 lb and let them expand. Go for it and let us know how it goes.

Good luck, Pete
