Variegated airplane plant in flower bed?

roselee z8b S.W. TexasApril 16, 2014

Has anyone tried using variegated airplane plant as a sort of ground cover in a flower bed. I have so many babies I thought I might try it, but it might just make a big mess.

Whatch' think?

I had it in two strip beds along a front sidewalk. I thought it looked great--real splashy & very tough when mulched well with oak leaves.

The roots get pretty thick--might crowd out other plants--but they're easy to pull up. I used it a lot as a border, back when I lived sw of Houston.

They do come back here too! I found them slightly invasive but that was during the time when we got rain :-)

yeah, then you have them everywhere! I made the mistake of using them as a filler in an empty bed, 10 years later I still dig them out of the yard.
But they look good.

The nice thing about them is they will grow almost anywhere. Makes nice boarders where nothing else would grow. Yes they reproduce often but their runners can be pruned back to help control the spreading. And they can go a long time without water.
