Purple-Stemmed and Grass-Like Weeds

kristinainaustin(7)February 24, 2013

I live in Central Arkansas. The purple-stemmed weeds have completely taken over some of the yards in our subdivision and I can't figure out what they are:

The grass-like weeds are mostly taking over the side of our yard that doesn't get much sun and also stays pretty wet:

Thanks for any help! :)

The top one is Hairy Bittercress, Cardamine hirsuta. Explosive seeds and very fast spreading.

Hairy Bittercress and Annual Bluegrass (Poa Annua) The bittercress is very easy and cheap to kill (anything with 2-4 D or mecoprop). The second is a tougher weed by far. Revolver is the main weed control used to kill it after it comes up, but it is very expensive considering that both weeds die out with the heat. A good lawn service in your area should be able to do Fall pre-emergent applications and prevent both of these weeds.
