greenish flowers, growing in gravel driveway

mudsnake(8B)May 10, 2009

This plant has slightly greenish flowers. The flower buds are green.

It is growing in a gravel driveway in North Florida.

Here are some images (click on image to enlarge):

Can anyone ID this?

Thanks!

It is Shepherds Purse.

Doesn't look quite right to be shepherds purse and I would go with pepperweed, (I have both this and shepherds purse) but it is very closely related and can probably be considered the same thing for virtually all purposes--growth habits are pretty much the same, control is the same, weedy nature is the same, both are in the mustard family, etc. It is not perennial pepperweed, which can be quite invasive and hard to remove since it is perennial. This one spreads by seeds and is easy to control with either tillage or herbicides.

Do you think that the species is virginicum?

I read that it is edible and tastes like pepper.

Not trying to cause a stir, but I have shepherds purse in my yard as well. I think it looks like shepherd's purse. I try to get it before it gets to flower and seed! Notches in the leaves...

hortster,

Please compare the heart-shaped seedpods of shepherd's purse with those in the OP's image -- rounded. Not the same.
