Headless body of bird

paulsiu(5a)May 9, 2012

While loading my feeder this afternoon, I notice the body of a bird. I was trying to see if perhaps the bird had gotten sick. I notice the body was intact but the head was missing.

This is rather odd. Typically when a hawk takes a bird, all I usually find is a pair of wings. What kind of animal would just takes off the head?

Could have been a window strike that a Coon found?

Owls do that. Evidently the head is the best part.

It was far from the window. I have never seen an owl here, but they are probably hard to spot. In any case, the body disappeared overnight, probably eaten by a opossum or raccoon.

I just had the same thing happened to me. I'm sitting in my backyard then all of a sudden I hear a bang right next to my head. I just thought a bird hit my sliding window, which is not uncommon. I reach down to help the little guy up only to discover it had no head. At first I thought it was decapitated from the impact. Then I realized the bird was some predators meal.
I've seen a lot of hawks but never any owls in my area. I've only heard any owl once in my area.
This Happened at about 2pm. It was pretty crazy.

Crows, jays, and grackles often prey on smaller birds, decapitate them, and (gulp) dine on the brains.
