Pond, plants, fish and wildlife

susie_12345June 3, 2013

I have just build myself a pond which holds about 1000 liters. I have dream in mind of creating a healthy environment for the fish and other native wildlife, but at the same time keeping the water as clear as possible. Can anyone advice me on which water plants to use? I have read that certain fish together with certain plants can create a muddy, cloudy environment.

I'm sure if you posted this on the Ponds forum, you would get a few responses.

You need an aerator for a man-made pond. A really really good nursery (not Home Depot) would help with vegetation, although I think that tends to take care of itself, if you don't use poison on the lawn or to kill bugs.

Hope you get better answers than mine! And good luck with it!

Water Lillie's, water lettuce. More shade than sun is also a factor. Lots to select from a good nursery
