Michigan weed ids?

plathJuly 1, 2010

All of these are growing in my yard or garden beds and I don't know whether to rip them out or not. We haven't really done much work on the flower beds this year, so I've just let things grow. Maybe they're all "weeds" but I don't want to get rid of them if they're not. Our neighbors do keep a bird feeder well stocked all year, so they could just be birdseed growth.

Plant 1~ this is ragweed, right?:

Sorry, I don't know any other way to post more than one link with this board setup (or more than one pic either). Try this one. It should let you click on each individual pic.

Just a guess - the one with blue flowers Prunella or heals all.

The "fern" like foliage is a common plant that some people consider a good ground cover while others consider it a "weed" so it depends on where it is and what you want growing there. The others, it is difficult to identify them. Whether any plant is a "weed" or not depends on you. If this is a plant you want, growing where you want it (or maybe don't mind), then it is not a "weed". But if this plant is one you do not want, growing where you do not want it to grow then it is a "weed". I have several Rosa Rugosa'a that fit that category, a plant I do not want growing where I do not want it therefore a "weed", although there are some Columbines that have self seeded in an area where I would not plant them but they grow there and I leave them alone.

I understand the weed vs. plant comment, I was just hoping for some i.d.'s so if they were beneficial, I could move them to where I wanted them. Besides that, I'm just curious. I had a wild plant "expert" look at my pics and he said that:
1. ragweed, which I suspected after some online searching
2. mugwort, Artemisia vulgaris
3. is still unknown
4. all heal, as squirejohn posted.

Thanks for all who looked. Still wondering about number 3.

I believe your third plant is Virginia Stickseed, Hackelia virginiana.
