Which of these tomatoes (regular) would you choose?

hc_ffootball2002July 24, 2011

I am thinking about growing some tomatoes in a 5-gallon bucket or a 18-gallon container. Please choose 3 from the list.

Celebrity

Cherokee Purple

Florida 91

Kewalo

Marmara

Momotaro

Salsa

I live in zone 11 (Hawaii). Thanks! :)

In a 5 gallon bucket - none of the above. In an 18 gallon container with a good soil-less potting mix any of them will work. I'd do Cherokee Purple, Momotaro, and Florida or Kewalo.

I'd recommend Cherokee Purple, I haven't grown the others so I can't offer an opinion on them.

Dave is right, as far as containers go, bigger is better. People do grow indeterminates tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets, but unless it is a SWC (Self Watering Container) you could be hard pressed to keep the growing medium moisture level consistent.

After looking at http://vegvariety.cce.cornell.edu I came up with a new list to choose from:

Arkansas Traveler
Cherokee Purple
Eva Ball Purple
Florida 91
Momotaro
Odoriko

Let me know what you think. Thanks!
