What is this weed?

budfoxSeptember 30, 2013

In the last few weeks this weed has spread all over by tiny backyard. I have river pebble/rocks and no grass and 3 months ago I sprayed for weeds using the high power stuff (Ortho Ground Clear)... which do every fews months since I have nothing but pebbles/rocks.

Then we had a really, really wet summer in Charlotte NC and these plant/weeds have grown everywhere in my backyard.

I tried pulling them today and some were so rooted that I couldn't pull them.

Looks like mimosa tree.

I'd say more like an acacia.

@hortster- yep that's it.

Is that a weed??? Is it normal to have these growing in a backyard (no vegetation, just river rock)?

Acacia, a member of the Mimosa family, is often planted where it can help control erosion since it can be a fast growing tree. Some consider it a "weed" while others look for it to put In the landscape.
A "weed" is a plant you do not want growing where you do not want it growing, so this could be a "weed" where it is but a desirable plant in another location in your landscape.

Both are weeds to me. Personally, I have no erosion. My neighbor's mimosa is not a desirable plant because of its seed production which causes it to be a plant that I do not want growing where I do not want it growing, ergo, a plant that produces weeds in my landscape beds. I constantly use glyphosate to eradicate the numerous seedlings. I wouldn't have to use that product nearly as much if it wasn't for the mimosa seedlings. Hand pulling them leaves roots which seem to always return.
