sunlicious(4)November 16, 2012

a wild boar was shot and killed near britton, sd (ne/sd, near nd border) just lately. another was shot near madison, sd a few weeks ago.

i've considered myself an outdoorsman my whole life and i never have heard something of this nature before.

The boars, or shooting them?

It's not surprising. I live in Texas and the locals who live in rural areas say the population of wild pigs exploded over the last decade. Our drought two years ago curtailed their numbers, but it's not uncommon to see dead ones hit by cars on the side of the road if you take rural highways. They're huge! I thought the first dead one I saw was a bear.

This article from USDA shows the increase in range from 1998 to 2004, almost double! The info seems very conservative, from what little I know about them. It's not surprising they have made it to SD by now. There are several different kinds of wild and feral pigs/hogs, most capable of interbreeding. MS state has a brief article about their history.

I saw a dead one on the side of the road in Geneva, AL about 3 weeks ago. The buzzards were coming in from miles away but getting close enough to take this pic made them go up in the trees until I got back in my car.
