Weed in lawn

david23231November 22, 2013

Hi All:

Anyone know what this is? They told me wild onion at a speciality turf store. I'm not so sure wanted to get second opinion.

This weed is mixed in with my fescue. It grows a little bit faster than the fescue. No smell when after I mow. I think it came in when I put kentucky 31 tall fescue seed down.

Any thoughts?

Not wild onion. It is a grass of some kind. Looks like a young plant, which makes it kind of hard to identify because there is still a lot of development left to do. However, it does look like it could be orchard grass.

Thank you beeone! I think you're right. Come spring I'll let some go to seed.

I just need to get some herbicide that kills a bunch of different grasses but fescue safe, yeah?

If that "specialty" turf store identified that stem as "wild onion" that is one store I would steer clear of. Wild onion will always produce that oniony odor when clipped.

Any turf grass poison that would kill off that grass will also kill off your fescue.

Here is a link that might be useful: images of wild onion
