Do Truffles "bloom" or burst? I live near a lake in the woods and there are many brownish blackish fungi coming to the surface; could they be truffles? (I hope!!!)

Truffles are certainly found in Va. and in many other states. Why not call your local extension office for some information about which trees play host to the species of truffles that may be in your location? Truffles are mychorrizal fungi and will be found only in association with certain tree species, like oak and beech, etc.

Perhaps there's a mycological society near you which can help. Your extension office should be able to help with that. ID, of course, is essential.

truffles grow underground, not above ground. so those are most likely NOT truffles if you see them without digging.

Any chance we could see an image of your fungi? We 'might' be able to help with an ID.
