sunflower seeds

rowdysmomJune 3, 2011

We moved into a new (to us) house this winter and in one of the flower beds a volunteer giant sunflower came up. The bloom was gorgeous and I have let it stay there, just drying, hoping to gather some seeds. I noticed today that there are hundreds of seeds in the head (it is about 10 inches across).

Does anyone know what I do to the seeds? Just harvest them? Or is there something special that I have to do with them? I'd like to plant some more seeds, but am not sure if it will reproduce from the seeds.

Just harvest when dry. They will reseed. I have some that came up in my veg garden last year. Did nothing, hoping the birds would eat them, but this spring there were about a hundred plants all over the place. Pulled up all but one. They are pretty, but a weed to me.

Thanks for the info! I consider the regular sunflowers weeds, but this giant one was gorgeous!!! I'm going to try to grow another one or two from the seeds.

i only have 2 that sprouted this year, about 5' tall atm. tallest i've had was about 8' tall.

last summer i had several cut heads drying at my back porch and a couple of cardinals came and ate some of the seeds, they sure made a mess. there was a bunch of shells all over the porch. lol

here's a pic from a few days ago.

I left the seed head on for a while and then put it on the ground thinking little critters might eat them. The next spring I had many sprout, but not enough to be a bother. I transplanted them by the fence so the wind could not whip them as much, or I could tie them to the fence if necessary.
