Unidentified 3-Leafed Woods Plant. ?Trillium?

jim_dandy(z6 PA)April 28, 2005

I found this plant growing in the woods near my house. I tried to look it up but I don't even know what words to use for a search. I haven't been able to find anything about it. It is only a few inches tall and about 3-4 inches wide. Could it be a form of trillium?

Does anyone know what it is? It is really neat looking.

It's a cool little plant. There should be a colony of them if you clear the leaves away. They get tiny white flowers later in the season. My husband decided to create a water diversion around my beds to control spring rain flooding and I haven't seen the spotted wintergreens yet this year -I think they were washed away :(

When I looked it up on Plants Database it said that they are endangered in Illinois and Maine and they are exploitably vulnerable in New York. Does this mean that they are generally rare or just in those places? I'm so excited to have such a cool plant.

Very cool little plant and you should be excited. I love the veining in the leaves. Congratulations!

Esh ga, you are GOOD at plant ID.

They tend to like drier, acidic soil. I can't get them to overwinter in our clay soil here...

That's a cool looking plant. I've never seen anything like it even though I believe I've seen wintergreen before growing wild in northern Ontario.
