companions for Black Walnut
I bought a property with about 15 black walnut trees growing - well, struggling along the drive. The soil is fairly heavy clay and we have had drought conditions for the majority of my time here. So they are not exactly loving it but they're not near death either. It seems like they weren't the best choice for this spot. I want to add some more trees to the property. Despite concerns about juglone, I've had no problems with most of the perennials growing near the trees. However, I understand that pine trees and fruit trees tend to be very negatively affected by the juglone. Is that true?
Could you please share ideas about trees I might plant? They have to be tough generally because they would get no pampering here. I don't water beyond the first season (I am on a well). I have almost 2 acres so lots of room. Also the trees would need to be 'resistant' to the juglone.
