should I cut?

pondwelr(z5 WI)June 10, 2009

Red barberry in my front yard was cut down a bit by the landscapers, and all the new growth is brilliant, hot, pink! So beautiful.

I know nothing about trimming shrubs, but these two guys are right next to the public sidewalk and need to be kept from arching over and snagging someone.

I remember one landscaper saying to cut long limbs from the bottom. Makes sense. So how can I get this lovely

color most of the summer without a 'butch' haircut?

I'm not a shrub expert, but with most shrubs, you can trim out up to one/third of the older branches (from the bottom) every year for three years, and then you'll have a new shrub!

You can watch for arching branches, and cut them back just enough so that they don't hurt the passers-by.

Just my two cents worth, but I'm sure someone else will chime in with better advise.
