Does anyone know what these flowers are?

A friend of mine from New Richmond WI has these flowers growing in her yard. She says that they self seed every year. They're a very dark purple and vivid pink. The second picture is a little washed out because of the flash but,I used it to show the metal shape. Does anyone know what these are?

The second photo looks like Zinnias, but I don't think Zinnias reseed themselves in our climate - too cold.

What is the diameter of the flower head?

How about a pic of the foliage? Judging from the green bracts behind the petals, they can't be zinnias. My guess would be double annual asters.

I just found out that these are China Asters. They're an annual but,they self seed.
