What's growing on this tomato plant?!

WhitneyClaireJuly 6, 2011

Can anyone tell me what's growing on this tomato plant?! The plant looks healthy other than the fungus that's near the base.

It looks like the same kind of fungus that grows on leaf mulch but doesn't harm anything.

I tried looking up tomato diseases but didn't see anything that looked similar.

southern blight, fungus can cause damping off or in older plants a crown rot leading to wilt and plant death; look for tan sclerotia in mass of whitish fungal growth above the soil line

Lucky you. That's a slime mold, NOT southern blight. So not a problem in any shape or form.

It just happened to pick the tomato to climb up on. Usually they form on top of mulch. Before they form the reproductive structure you see they feed on bacteria in the mulch/soil.
