Wrong Season to Aerate?

wacogardener(8)July 18, 2011

Hello all.

I just made arrangements to aerate my lawn this weekend, but have read conflicting stances on aerating in the summer. Will it harm my lawn to aerate by allowing moisture to leave the soil (I have pretty heavy clay) or will it be alright to go ahead with?

There's a lawn forum that's pretty active so since you don't have an answer yet and you need one soon I'd recommend you try over there too.

Here is a link that might be useful: Lawn forum

Big difference between a lawn in Connecticut and a Texas lawn! Specially in summertime. I can't think of any reason why you couldn't aerate as long as you water afterwards. An aerator just cores into the soil and drops the plugs on top and I can see how that might cause damage to your lawn root system in these temps if you did not provide adequate moisture after the process.

Seems to me it would make the lawn more permeable so the water would go deeper. I don't think evaporation from the little holes would neccesarily be a problem. Since we are only supposed to water the lawn once a week the ground gets so hard and dry that I've noticed the water will sometimes just run off to the side without penetrating. I hand water in the evening so that less evaporates than it would with a sprinkler, but I try to abide by the rules even so. I have a moisture meter to see how deeply the water goes so the roots will go deep. Or I should say I HAD one. The tip was lost somewhere in the lawn last week. If anyone sees one of the $5 ones for sale anywhere let me know.
