Identify plant- very invasive

m0m3b0ysJuly 10, 2010

I live on a wooded lot next to a river. This plant grows around the edges of the woods and in the woods down to the river. It seems to crowd everything out.

Can you tell me what it is?

Looks to be a grass, perhaps a Dichanthelium. Have you seen any with flowers?

I have not seen any with flowers.

This plant reminds me of another weed I've had in my gardens that gets a blue flower, but I really don't think it is the same plant.

The leaves can look a bit like dayflower. Here's a link that might help. When it mentions a "ligule" it means a membranous bit of tissue on the inside of the leaf where it meets the stem. Sometimes the ligule can have hairs in panic grasses.

Here is a link that might be useful: Deer-tongue Panic Grass

I found some of the plants that went to seed. I think you are right on that it is Dichanthelium.

Now if i can keep it out of my edge of the woods. The ferns seem to win over it.

Thanks!

My guess would be Deer-tongue Grass or Deer-tongue Panic Grass (Dichanthelium clandestinum)
