When to prune Texas Sage

west_texas_peg(8a West Cen TX)July 3, 2011

Moved here in April, have a very old Texas Sage bush...it has a lot of dead in it and figure it would benefit from a pruning but not sure now is a good time with our drought and record heat. Should I wait til next Spring or can I trim back this Fall?

Texas sage will definitely benefit from pruning back and you can cut it back quite a bit without damaging it. If you cut it back in fall it will not fill in until spring so you'll have to make an assessment and decide if it will look better cut back all winter than it does now.

You can always safely remove dead wood, no matter what the season.

I would not trim it now if you want blooms this season. I would wait till fall.
