These are 2 drought tolerant Texas natives but I cant find where to buy them. Does anyone know a nursery that sells them? Thanks....Judith
Are you talking about Melochia tomentosa? Bustani Farms in Oklahoma carries it, available in Spring 2012 for $6.00. I think its the same plant you are calling Texas Tea Bush.
Thats the one! I will check them out - hope they are mailorder. Wish they had it for fall.....thanks!
Both of these have been available in Austin at the Natural Gardener. The Texas pyramid bush CAN be cold sensitive in Z 8 so mulch it well in the winter especially the first winter. I lost three new ones last year. I might have been from me not watering it too. I aam pretty sure they do not do mail order. But you could check.
They had it available for mail order on the website but there is a new post on the Oklahoma Gardening Forum announcing that Bustani's are no longer offering mail order service after January 2012. Seems they sent an announcement in the mail from what I just read.
I'd be happy to send seeds from the Velvet pod mimosa when my tree produces them. I'll have to look to be sure, but might have some from last year. Email your address through my page. Keep in mind that it, and the Texas tea bush, apparently likes alkaline soil so if you have acid soil you may have to amend it.
Mike Heep's nursery in Harlingen has Melochia tomentosa for sale. He's planning to start offering plants via mail-order or eBay once he retires from his day job in September.
I have sent Mike an email, havent heard back from him yet but am hoping to.
roselee, when do you get seed pods? before the Oct swap? If so will you bring a couple for me?
Yes, I'm putting it on my list right now to bring some.
