To donate or to compost

TomatobabyAugust 26, 2012

My community garden has a donation program set up with a local food bank. Since i have an excess right now of tomatoes i would like to donate them. But the summer has been horrible where the garden has been. It has been extremely foggy and really hasnt gotten much sun except for the last 5 weeks or so otherwise it is overcast. So all my tomatoes there are bitter. Personally i cannot handle the taste. They taste like mud to me.

Is it wrong to donate these? I feel horrible donating bad tasting tomatoes but i feel bad also just throwing really beautiful tomatoes in the compost. Any thoughts? Is ther anything else i can do? Thank you!

If they are that bad I'd compost them. While I'm a big supporter of food banks and such I want all the stuff I donate to be at least "acceptable" in quality.

Many times bitter tomatoes can be salvage by canning them in highly seasoned recipes such as Italian Tomato Sauce if one is willing to put in the work. But since home canned foods can't be donated that fact doesn't help the food bank.

I agree with Dave about not donating tomatoes that you wouldn't use yourself. I would not put them in the compost either because you will end up with a lot of volunteers in places that you don't want them next year. Try making sauce with a lot of herbs, then freeze it.

Let a few other people taste them and see if they agree. Compared to store tomatoes they may pass.

I agree. What may be "bitter" to you could be tasty to someone else.
