Is this tree a Chinese Lantern tree?

aledmOctober 14, 2009

When we were in the Philippines we saw this tree by the seaside. The locals called it a Chinese lantern tree or in the local language bitoon. The "seeds" and "flowers" on this tree don't look like the ones on the thread called "Does anybody know what this tree is (photo)?" on the Texas Gardening Forum [http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/txgard/msg031358086283.html] which are identified as Chinese lantern trees.

Does anyone know what the name of the tree we saw in the Philippines is?

Here is the link to the "seeds"

Here is the link to the "flower" on the same tree:

Thanks for your help!

Greetings Again, I screwed up when I posted my message requesting help identifying the tree

we saw in the Philippines. Now the links below will allow you to see the photos of the seeds

and flowers on this tree. Any help would be appreciated! aledm

In the back of my brain is the name of this tree and my tree book is somewhere in storage. Pseudobombax ellipticum or shaving brush tree. There was one on campus at Queens Medical Center when I worked there years ago.

Hi Everyone!
The flower of Pseudobombax ellipticum or shaving brush tree looks similar but it isn't the same--the "Chinese Lantern" is whiter with only a little pink. The seed of Pseudobombax ellipticum or shaving brush tree is very different from the one I saw by the seaside in the Philippines. Any other ideas? Thanks!!!

Has to be in the same family. There are several members that have similar flowers. They grow in Hawaii and I remember seeing them when I lived there.
