Anyone Grow Pink Surprise Bush? Orthosiphon lablatus

alameda/zone 8November 14, 2012

I purchased this plant recently - wasnt told much about it but it has beautiful blooms. I read online that it is hardy from zones 9-11. Has anyone pushed the limits on this plant? I am in zone 8 and was wondering if I kept it in the greenhouse over the winter and planted it in spring, if it might be able to be overwintered next year. Anyone have any photos of it as a mature bush?

I have grown Orthosiphon stamineus (aka Cat Whiskers, Java Tea) and my experience is that the one I planted in the ground didn't make it over the winter last year. The one I put in a pot stayed in my flower hut - not a greenhouse, it is not heated at all - during the winter and it died back there, but came back this spring. Very thirsty plant - I couldn't keep the one in the pot watered enough this summer, so as with all plants that need too much attention, it ended up in the compost pile last month.
