tomatoes taste good but are hard

winemaker54(5a)September 3, 2013

I started some tomatoes from seed this year -Burpee's "Farmstand" tomatoes - the plants are wonderful with lots of large beautiful fruits on them. The problem is that the tomatoes themselves are hard - even when ripe to the point of rotting they are very hard in texture and not really very pleasant - the fruit itself is sweet and rather nice - its just the texture - its like that of a green tomatoe
Does anyone know what happened or how I can correct this.

Certain varieties have characteristics that make them more suitable for specific uses. Some toms are "slicers", "pastes", etc. It may be you have a very solid paste type tom there. Not familiar with "Farmstead"...

these tomatoes are supposed to be "slicers" but I cooked some today and they made very good tomato soup so I will be able to use them at least.
They were grown in huge planters - about 20 L.- have been well fertilized and watered. I am growing 3 other varieties in the same manner that are very successful - lots of fruits and nice flavor and texture
