NEW: Acres Edible Swap

purpleacres(Upper Northern California)December 31, 2008

Howdee,

It's time again for my annual Acres Edible Seed Swap as I have put on for the last several years. This will be the 7th year for this seed swap .. Last year over 40 people and over 1500 seed packages were involved and a lot of fun was had by all

NOW THE RULES

All seeds must produce edibles. (veggie, herbs and fruit found in an edible garden)

All seeds must be clearly marked and packed correctly.

All seed packages should contain enough seed to try out that particular edible.

You will receive at least the amount of packages you send in most likely more..

You must send a wish list if your except to receive certain seeds back.

You must attach the correct amount of postage to the self addressed stamped bubble mailer or address labels and stamps to get the mailer back to you.

You must send your full name on the mailer , mailing address, garden web name and email address on a card or added to your lists. This helps me a lot. Emailing it too me works as well

A list of seeds you sent is recommenced. This helps so you donÂt get your own seeds back..

One person must not send in more than 5 copies of one certain seed.

One person must not send in more than 50 seed packages.

all mailers are due at my house by January 31th. Packages will be filled in order of arrival.

All mailers will leave my house headed back to you by February 14th

Sorry for all the rules it just makes a better and more organized swap and a lot easier if rules are involved. With only my self doing the swap as much information I can get is the best.

Acres

Please post here if interested and I will email you my postal address.

what i meant to ask was: is there a minimum seed count per packet? most flower swaps are specific about it--it seems the norm is around 20-25. i've had swaps for tomatoes where 10 seeds is perfectly acceptable. just trying to get a rough idea of what's expected. thanks!

With Barbi that makes 14. It's nice to see a few people in the last years swaps. I have such a great time doing these swaps I should do lots more trading and swaping but life seems to get in the way. Any who this should be a great swap. I just was clearing out part of my craft room to have room for all the seeds and packages. Fun fun fun

Jaynine and all others new to swaps , Acording to Gardenweb questions and answers it reads
"How many seeds are considered a 'fair' trade?
A fair trade is whatever you and the other trader agree to. Generally, two to three dozen seeds should be enough to ensure germination and growth of a satisfying number of plants. However, the most certain way to assure both parties will be satisfied is to discuss quantities when negotiating the trade."
I usually put in about 10 to 20 larger seeds and a tea spoon or so of smaller seeds but, I deal in all heirlooms and have piles of seed. Just be sure to put in enough to try that certain variety. Use your own judgment. I have had people send in as much as a full new packet and as little as a few seeds. A good rule of thumb is to think as if you are trading with your self how many seeds would you like to get back.
Hope this helps and if you have any other questions feel free to ask

ok, I have been looking at this one from the beginning and wondering IF I could manage to get 50 packs of veggies together. I am STILL thinking...
I want to make a seed store run first and then I will know for sure if I can do this one.
I have a question purpleacres are the veggies that come in more common everyday garden variety or more unusual types or does it tend to balance out with a mixture of common/unusual?
Just curious :)!

Thanks bunches,

Here's my want list, copied from my exchange page. I like to grow mostly open-pollinated, heirloom veggies, flowers, fruits, herbs, etc. so I can save seeds from year to year. * *Dual purpose beans
* * TOMATO:

* *Silvery Fir Tree
* *OTHER VEGGIES:
* *Winter Squash, "Bush Buttercup"
* *Gourd, "Nigerian Saybo"
* *Broccoli,"Early Purple Sprouting"
* *FRUIT:
* * Melon, "Prescott Fond Blanc"
* * Melon, "Charentais"
* * Melon, "D'Alger"
* *HERBS:
* *Caraway
* *Fennel - for seeds
* *Mugwort
* *Dwarf Basil (Bush Basil, non-hybrid)
* *Stevia

After looking at the lists and exchange pages, I have found quite a few wants that I can fill -- this is going to be a great swap! Thank you, Acres!

I'm interested - I've been lurking, but I'm totally new to this and would really hate to mess something up with the swap. (I'm sure I'll get detailed instructions, I think I have the general idea of how all of this works though).

Since I am so new to this, my seed stash is very limited (quantity wise). If I were to send say 5 packs of 10 seeds each, that would be enough to participate?

Thanks for this opportunity to expand my garden!

Howdee all

I have noticed a lot of people are posting want list and the seeds they sent list on the forum. This is strictly for the people that are sending in there seeds. I will only use these as a guide line. I really hope that does not upset anyone. With my self only doing the sorting and packaging and swap. I have a certain way of doing my swap and no one has complained yet (knock on wood) Seven years is a long time of doing this swap. I have it down to a science. I ask that if you have major changes to your wish lists you send me a private email and I will gladly add that to your original wish list and do my best to make all your wishes come true.

On a personal note: I would normally hang out at this computer and check this post several times a day if not more with the swap is going on but, I have been in and out of a hospital for the last week. My nieces husband had a heart attack at the age of 40 no doubt and had to go in to do a double by pass and if that is not enough we spent all day yesterday and half the night in the ER. My silly hubby tried to chop his thumb while chopping wood. We left the hospital with a bolt in his (broken) thumb about 2 am last night. Its a blessing to say my hubby and nieces husband are home today and doing good. WHAT A WEEK

Enough venting here is the new list of seeds sent in We are getting a great selection of seeds.

OMG, Tracy I did didn't I? I tried so hard to get everything right for these swaps...I am wondering now if I put it on anything I sent in to the other swaps too :(. I was so worried about getting the stuff mailed out and on the piece of paper I had written out, not the typed on I DID have it on there, maybe I was thinking it would magically appear once it got there? LOL.
I'm sorry, thank goodness you knew it was from me, because I don't recall putting my GW name on anything, NOT EVEN the envy and I usually put it on the outside under my name!
I plead the stress of being over worked from packing....LOL... THAT'S MY STORY.
Thanks Tracy, maybe if you add somethings to your want list my elf will drop them in for the Wow swap! ;)...

Wow, Purpleacres, this is shaping up to be one of the biggest swaps (i.e., most players) I've seen in awhile. Hope you eat your Wheaties every day! :) I know you're a "vet" at this, though, so it will probably be a piece of cake. Thank you!

I have been making seed packs for like weeks I think. Its so much fun and keeps my eye on gardening. Wheaties nahh Im more of a frosted mini wheats girl :-) But yeah the mailers are packed this year and it will be a great swap. And just know I am adictted to these things so I will be posting my Acres tomato and pepper only swap Febuary 1st. Actually was thinking about doing a Acres squash it swap (A swap for only squashes) But I dont know if that how that would do.

Hey Acres
I would think a squash swap would be great would it include cukes, pumpkins, summer and winter squash?
Don't know if I would have enough tomatoes and peppers to join that one but I would love to be able too.

Acres! Thanks so much for organizing, and I will definitely be in for the tomato swap, and a squash swap would be great aswell (maybe squash, pumpkins, melons?). I don't grow a great variety for seed saving due to cross pollination problems but have some commercial packs to share. Thanks again! thehills

The Acres edible swap is going wonderfully. I just went through over 1200 seed packs and only have 22 mailers in so far. Im seeing alot of great seeds and will have fun with the wish lists. REMEMBER if you want to add to your wish lists please email me directly. Alot of great people have posted what they are sending so check those out and you may find a hidden treasure.

On a side note:

Acres "Tomato and pepper only" swap sign up will be posted Feb 1st.

Acres "Squash it!" swap sign up will be posted Feb 1st. and will only include summer squash, winter squash and pumpkins only. No melons! A melon is more closely related to the cucumber.

I believe both these new swaps will have shorter sign up lists so they will both be posted the same day Feb. 1st.

Please know these are two complete different swaps. They may be shipped the in the same mailer to save shipping but must have completly different wish lists and seeds sent in list. perhaps put each different swap in a ziplock style bag.

I will post both these new swaps and if I dont get 10 people in the swap. That swap wont fly. Really short numbered swaps are not to much fun no mater what wonderful things that host does to make it great.

Im off to make more tea

I mailed my mailer this afternoon, you should recieve on Thursday or Friday at the latest. I sent in a lot of tomatoes and peppers (sweet, mild, and hot), and other veggies.

Hmmm..... I've not done an all exclusive tomato & pepper only swap, I may have to check it out.

Thanks Tracy for all your hard work on the swap. I'm sure we are all going to love our seeds when our mailers arrive back home.
