Pruning Cherry Tomatoes

yumtomatoes(10a/FLA)September 16, 2011

I have a Sun Gold plant that I am going to pot up into its final home soon. What I have done so far is to cut off the lower leaves each time I have potted it up (twice before) and buried the stem up to the remaining leaves. I also have clipped off any blossoms that formed since the plant is not yet in its final home.

Once it is in its final home, should I remove suckers as I would for an indeterminate plant? I know this will reduce yield, but I would like the fruits to be larger if possible.

Very little variation in size. Pruning suckers isn't going to turn a cherry into something larger. Just make sure you have a sturdy staking system.

So should I just leave the suckers?

Are you saying its not an Indeterminate variety ? You dont want to trim off suckers on a determinate plant . There are varieties that producer larger fruit if thats what you desire.

Sun Gold is indeterminate. I chose a cherry because of its ability to set fruit in hot/humid climates and its earliness. I am also growing beef steaks but those take longer and don't set fruit as well in hot/humid climates.
