Plant Azaleas now?

ginnypenny(East TXZ8)December 3, 2011

I have a lady who lost four Encore Azaleas due to the heat and drought this summer. She wants to replace them, but we are unsure of the time to do this. Now? In early spring?

We are in the Jacksonville area. They will be planted in a side bed that is well protected on west, north and east.

Any suggestion will be appreciated.

Encore azaleas are cold hardy so they can be planted now as well as in the spring. I suppose it's possible you may lose some blooms during the winter, but no damage will occur to the foliage or root system. Planting in the spring will give them less time to get established before the next cycle of heat and drought. My personal choice in my garden would be to plant now.

Thanks, Molly, that was my thinking....but some of my best thinking has gotten into some of my worst spots:).

We are getting the perfect kind of rain last night and today, hope it keeps up.
