Coffee or tea to color stones?

jenn(SoCal 9/19)July 11, 2004

Last night we were talking about easy and inexpensive methods of changing the appearance of our fireplace bricks which are light grey. Suddenly I remembered some old threads about dying stepping stones by painting or wiping brewed coffee or tea over their surface. Am I remembering that correctly? Is it as simple as that?

We are planning to buy a stone or two and experiment with this. Hey, it stains our teeth a nice brown color, so why not porous stone? :o)

I'd like to hear input from others who have used this method to dye their stones.

Thanks,

Jen

There is a product called tea dye varnish. It is used to create an antique aged finish. I've never used it, but you could do a search-it might be under paper plus.
It would probably be much easier to use, and would give you a more uniform finish. Hope this helps.
