Schefflera actinophylla/pueckleri top is weird. Can i just lop it off?

stenzelsUpdated The plant was in a shade house of a SoCal tropical distributor (LA Tropicals--good place). I showed photos to one of the managers and he suspects some sort of disease as well. Fingers crossed on my amputation as a solution.

stenzelsUpdated Specifically, it is schefflera arboricola, I believe. That is a smaller kind of schefflera that is often seen as a house plant, sometimes even as a bonsai. Larger varieties are discussed in this post.

BarbJP CA 15-16/9BUpdated I first thought of Prunus caroliniana too, but I think the seeds/nuts of Prunus c. are a little smaller. But yes, as stated by catspa and hooveb, neither are edible.

kittymoonbeamUpdated That's just what I do. Who cares how it looks when it works so well. You can move them around and they store in a small space when you're not using them. Get them on sale when stores start clearing out the summer stuff.

llilibel03Updated Thanks for the replies. We had the spittle bug problem, too. Took them off one by one. We also catch the grasshoppers when we can. Our neighbor has a huge compost pile in the front of his house so we release the critters there...

hoovb zone 9 sunset 23Updated We had six of them. They were attractive in bloom, or when bare. The foliage was nice for a few weeks and then started to look awful. I had them all dug out. Good riddance.

Wild Haired Mavens(Zone 10)Updated Looks like the pot is too big but just plant something else as its too weak to move. It will grow back from the roots if you put some companion plants in the pot and give it summer shade.
