kittymoonbeamUpdated I would plant fig or blackberries. I tried apple in that little sun ( in a 15 gal can) There isn't enough sun to sweeten the fruit. Thornless blackberries would give you plenty of sweet fruit and you can train them anyway you like...

hoovb zone 9 sunset 23Updated It's not the size of the bark so much as how thickly you apply it, and that you renew it when it starts thinning. 3-4" is good. Larger pieces typically last longer than smaller ones.
