I also endorse Sluggo - it saved my dahlias from complete destruction by slugs when the bulbs were just pushing up through the ground. In one 24 hour period, my dahlias were reduced to stubs, and I had to dig them up, replant and cross my fingers that they'd come back. After one treatment of the Sluggo, the slugs disappeared overnight. The bulbs are doing well, and it looks like I'll have blooms. As a backup, I also put out dishes of beer, and yes ... it worked exceptionally well. I'm sure you won't need to use the backup, but I was so desperate to save my dahlias that I was willing to try everything. Coffee grounds, beer, Sluggo. Best of luck!

Slugs just ate all my zinnia seedlings 2 weeks ago, so I bought the same thing (I think it is a different brand, it is called "Slug Bait" but the active ingredient is the same: iron phosphate + bait. It is very effective.

You can get it from Home Depot of Lowes.

Beside the "Slug Bait" on the rack, there were also Slug Killer." I think that one is stronger but is more dangerous as the label says "not to be used around children."

I don't have children, but I like something milder, so I chose the Slug Bait. I found it VERY effective.

W O W !! What a beauty! Sorry I can't help name it, as I have never seen one like that before.

I'll be coming to the UK in September. Do you think one would be able to find dahlia tubers in September?

Beautiful dahlia. I'd love to have one like it.

Hi jroot

Your Dahlias are beautiful!

I'd like to post pics of my guys but i haven't figured out how to configure my pictures to the size that you post. My pics are either too small to see or 2 big for some forum members. Would you mind sharing your 'sizing' expertise with me :)

Thanks!

Hello Dale,

I store the pictures that I want to post in Photobucket.

In order to post on Garden Web, in a small size that is expandable:

1) log in to your photobucket site

2) select the shots you wish to reproduce

3) on the bottom, right of the PAGE, you will see "Generate HTML and IMG code. Press that. When you press the Generate HTML and IMG code, you will be redirected to another page, where you can copy the code.

4) Copy the top HTML Clickable for Ebay, Live Journal, My Space, etc.

5) Paste the copied code into the Garden Web page where you wish to post.

6) Proceed as per usual with the preview, etc.

Actually, you can select several pictures at a time and generate the codes at the same time.

I hope this helps.
John

Now that I look at it again it looks more like Pinelands Princess! So hard to tell from a picture when there's so many that look alike.

Yes JROOT , my wife is very sick. So I had to do something to even get her to want to get out of bed. It is too hot during the day now, but at night she comes out to sit.

Wow ! Gorgeous colour.

What kind of camera are you using? I have several, but my older olympus does not seem to like any shade of red. I could never take a shot like this one with it. I would have to use my leica lens on my panasonic.

I use a Canon EOS 400D with a canon macro lens (EF-S 60 mm).

I also have problems with some colors.

Thanks for the reply. I know about the exchange forums. I was wonering if there was one that was better then another since there isn't one specifically for Dahlias. Why is that?
So I posted my dahlia trade on the Bulb Exchange.

dahlia newbie,

Thank you for your kind words.

That plant you were asking about is some sort of perennial geranium. I was given a few pieces of it about 8 years ago. It gets about a foot tall, and spreads, but is easily yanked out from places you don't want it. Actually in the middle of it, near the hydrangea is a tree peony. I hope it doesn't get strangled by this stuff.

Thanks, Jroot, I might just print that pic out and save it for my plant-finding tour next spring. Geraniums do grow well for me, as long as my husband doesn't mistake them for weeds :). I would love to have peonies too, but not a cold enough winter here. Someday, I hope to have a garden like yours to relax and drink wine in!

Mine have been taking between 1 and 2 weeks to go from that stage to fully open flower.

Cheers,

Thanks, Russ. I guess that means I can suspend my 24-hour-a-day vigil in front of the plant for a little while :) I can't wait to see what this one is for sure...I didn't label anything unfortunately.

the foliage looks fine. But things (tomatoes) have looked a touch chlorotic in the past so I will get some seaweed fert or something. Thanks

well here is a DUH moment. Seems the ones that looked yellow on the outside of the buds were in fact....YELLOW DAHLIAS.
I thought that one was Penngift, a lavender. Turns out it is Honka. The other yellow-budded one is Inland Dynasty. (I wonder where I planted Pennsgift?)

I see something on the top leaves that concern me. Check under the leaves. Do they have spider mites on them? They are barely visible with a magnifying glass, but leave fine webs. Particularly check near the ends of the leaves. If so, a pesticide spray, or a mixture of dish soap, rubbing alcohol, and water may be in order.

I see the white spots near the bottom. These white spots can be caused by sun hitting the water drops, which in turn act like a magnifying glass and end up burning the leaf. When watering try to water the base of the plant rather than the leaves, particularly if after 9:00 a.m., but better still try to water around 7:00 a.m. when the sun is not too strong.

This watering thing is complicated. I have a sprinker system and a big lawn. I need to water the lawn but don't want to get the water on the dahlia leaves. I water them by hand. We just can't control water getting on the leaves as if it rains so be it.
