Why not try to root it? You probably would have better results if you give the cutting some protection from the hot sun for a while ( in a pot), and then you could transplant it when the roots have formed. Many of us do stem cuttings in the spring. You should also get more tubers in the fall.

Awesome! I'll keep my fingers crossed that it grows roots. I cut off the top of the stem that was wilted. Hopefully this will give it a better chance.

Thanks,
Dee

Hy Mallow is very cute. What's the white one with the pink on the edges? Do you have a close up of that at all? It's pretty..

The white one with pink on the edges is called "Miss Teagon". I love it. I love them all!

DB Fantastic!
I guess you must be close to my home, being that you belong to Dahlia societies in NY and CT.
I am from East Hartford, Ct. Since I do not have your contact info, (you mentioned helping me out with your fine Varieties)and I tried to find an e-mail address or something to contact you in spring........... perhaps there is another way, (hint)
How would you like to have a complete stranger visit?
Love to see the garden in person. ( I know this is bold, rash and uncalled for and please forgive my inproriety) :)

Please Keep the pictures comming
Thanks, Ox

Are they getting sun? Dahlias must have sun. Your comment about skinny stems makes me think that there is a lack of sun and they plants are reaching for light.

I'm with jroot on that one......it seems that there is a lack of good sun where you are growing and the plants are leggy.

I have mine growing quite close (6" - 9 "), and they don't rot. I am wondering if your bed is getting adequate drainage. Mine are slightly raised so I know they get the drainage they need. On the other hand, I have to water every day. Another thought might be the soil make-up. Is there too much clay, and not enough organics?

Maybe it is the drainage problem. I had to buy garden soil to plant mine because the soil I think is pretty heavy with clay. I wonder if it's better to use the original soil and just add organics.

Wow alyrics, you're planting Thomas Edison in a pot? How big is the pot(diameter wise)? I have a friend who wants to grow T.E. in a pot also but we don't know how big of a pot it has to be. Also, please let me know if it's thriving well in the pot. Any info would be most helpful...

DB, they are divine...

Are your Zorro blooms actually a little bit darker than what appears on the picture at all?? I'm still waiting for my Zorro to bloom cuz I planted it late, so just curious.

linht......yes, my Zorros are darker....the flash may have gone off when I took the photo causing them to look lighter. I've cut one off the bush and put it in a vase
It measures 10 inches across, just like the other two.
I'm only growing 3 up at a time to get them large.

They're lovely! I order from Breck's also and I question their description on bloom widths because my Kelvin Floodlight is always about 10 - 12 inches but the catalog says it's about 9 inches. And Garden Wonder is suppose to be 6 inches but mine are always around 4 - 5 inches. Oh well, at least they bloom I guess.

Beautiful colors. I have Barbarossa for the first time and I look forward to seeing it if it's that pretty. Well done, Butterflymaiden.

I wonder if Liquid Fence would deter squirrels? I don't have a problem with them (yet). No really big trees in the area (newly developed). Liquid Fence does work well to keep the rabbits out of my roses.

I use to have a big problem with animals big and small using my garden as a buffet. The Liquid Fence has helped amazingly. It actually does keep the squirrels out because I still see them chillin' in my neighbors' yards but they NEVER come in to mine anymore. I spray it about every other day and that seems to work well. I know it smells like "rear end" but it works wonders.

I wouldn't worry about the height of the plants.....if
you're getting a lot of sun in your garden then the plants
won't be as tall. Most of mine are between 3 and 5 ft
tall. The blooms themselves look great and very healthy.
Good job!

Thanks DB! I thought dahlias needed at least 8 hours of sun though? So too much sun may stunt their growth also? This is my 2nd year with dahlias so I kind of feel like a nervous mother.

Sure, no prob. There's a good pic of it on the online catalog at Swan Island Dahlias (www.dahlias.com). I think it's under "novelties and collarettes".

How large are the blooms and how tall is the mature plant?

The blooms are about 3-4 inches across and the mature plant is about 6 feet tall.

That is truly beautiful. Good for you, I rarely say I'm going to have to get something but maybe this one will make the list.
