therapy garden for wheelchair bound

hello all,

any help would be very appreciated. im doing a therapy garden for physically disabled residence. this is the first with more to come. i am wheelchair bound and a mentor for people who have recently become paralyzed. in there process of re-inserting themselves into society, i bring them to my accessble home(where im doing the 1st garden)and just get them in a comforable impression of what reality will be.

im looking for desert cactus,plants, and trees.

im willing to try to dig up and remove.

rich, Are you by any chance with the group of Iraq vets? It seems like i heard of a rehab group in Ariz.
I can't help you unless it'd be to send seeds. You might try posting on container gardening. I've been successful growing several types of veggies,herbs and flowers in 5 gal buckets that you could probably get for free from schools,hospitals and fast food places. These are portable,easier to water.and height friendly.
Just something to think about.

About ten years ago a group of gardeners asked our "Builders Ass. to furnish labor and we would buy the materials needed to build raised gardens for our Rest Home Clients. They were built about 3 ft. high and three wide, so folks in wheel chairs could reach them from either side. Walkways about three feet wide were made of cement on all sides so they would accomadate wheel chairs. The bottom foot and 1/2 were filled with sand and gravel for drainage and the top filled with a good growing soil. Most of the things planted were annuals with just a few perennials in the center of some of the beds. We used herbs, tomatoes, peas, string beans, onions and quite a number of annual flowers. Wish I had pictures, but I don't. Hope this helps. If a call is put out for help lots of folks will respond. These gardens are fully enjoyed by lots of folks. GOOD LUCK!

Hey Rich:

It sounds like you are planning some awesome stuff!

Often times "sensory gardens" will be used in therapy settings. As you can imagine, the design of these gardens will vary depending upon who will be using the garden. Needless to say, there are some pretty creative designers out there!

If you are interested, below is an article that covers sensory gardens. It may help with ideas.

For plant selection, I would suggest contacting the nearest University and seeing if they could direct you towards specific resources for your location.
