JUST AN IDEA TO SAVE A LITTLE $...
I TOOK A PEICE OF CARDBORD AND COVERED IT W/ FOIL THEN PLACED 1 ELECTRIC ROOT WARMER MAT IN THE CENTER. I TOOK A $2 INFLATEABLE POOL FLOAT(THE MATTRESS TYPE)AND USED AN I.V. TUBE & TRASH BAG FILLED TO FILL THE FLOAT 2/3 FULL W/ WATER. I NOW HAVE SPACE TO WARM 6-7 FLATS OF SEEDLINGS FOR THE PRICE OF 1. IT TAKES AFEW HOURS TO FILL BUT IF YOUR TRYING TO CUT CORNERS ITS WORTH IT AND MY PLANTS SEEM TO LIKE THEIR WATERBED!

RE: thrifty root warming

That's a great idea. I would after my daughter went to school put the seeds flats on her water bed. I did later find a water bed heater mat at a thrift store and used that alone for awhile but didn't want to take a chance of burning the house down. Your float idea could have worked for me.
